Say bonjour and hello to one of our newest pole dance instructors - the incredible Arizona! Arizona is an award-winning pole dancer specialising in old school, sexy, showgirl pole dance. This sultry vixen is bringing her wealth of experience to Sky Sirens, and we are so excited to have her as part of our Siren team. We had a chat with Arizona to find out a little more about this gorgeous performer and teacher.

How long have you been dancing and how did you start in pole?

I’ve been pole dancing for 7 years. Admittedly, I started pole dancing as an outlet to indulge the natural show-off in me. When I started in late 2010, Pole classes were a lot less common, a little taboo and was like being a part of an underground, secret society which I loved! I was a complete addict — poling 6 days a week, and I trained incredibly hard on improving my technique, floor work and flexibility. I started competing, teaching and performing 3 years into my pole journey and haven’t looked back since!

How long have you been teaching at Sky Sirens and which styles do you teach?

This is my first term with Sky Sirens and it’s been such a pleasure! I teach levelled pole classes from Babydoll Beginners to Rubies (Intermediate 3) as well as Velvet Vixens, which is sexy pole dance focusing on floor work and transitions.

How would you describe your dance and performance style?

I would describe my dance style as ‘old school sexy showgirl pole’. Give me all hip rolls, hair flicks and drop splits any day! My performance style varies depending on my mood, audience, theme and the song choice but overall focuses on my connection with the audience. As a showgirl, I work best when bouncing off energy with the crowd. It’s like having a banter and conversation while performing without talking!

What advice to you like to give to your students?

For those just starting out or thinking about starting out... it’s true what they say, pole IS hard. But that makes it even the more sweeter as you ‘unlock’ skill sets and tick off goals. Use your class time and  your instructor wisely — try the moves, no matter how scary or how challenging, get spotted, ask questions, do it all over again (and on the other side!) Record yourself, no matter how messy you think it is. I wish I’d done this as a beginner for those days when I’d get discouraged about my progress! Explore movement — on and off and the pole, and don’t worry about the other person next to you, they’re busy worrying about themselves! Most importantly, have fun! It’s all a journey and it’s an amazing one!

What do you do when you’re not being a Siren?

I’m a Remedial Massage Therapist, a uni student studying a Bachelor of Health Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine and of course, performing shows on weekends.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I would love to go back to Iceland in summer and see the rest of the country when there’s more than 4 hours of daylight, unlike last time! I’d also love to do a south-west American road trip, to eat all the good food!

What does this term hold for you?

I’ll be teaching Babydoll Beginners, Pearls, Emeralds & Rubies Pole and of course, both Velvet Vixens and Vixenettes for all the sexy, floor work goodness.
